Finnybank announce launch of Qercus
Finnybank Ltd earlier announced that it has purchased Acorn User magazine from Tau Press and promised more details of the format of the new magazine. Finnybank now own both Acorn Publisher and Acorn User magazine and whilst it might be tempting to simply merge the two publications there are subscribers to Acorn Publisher who may not be interested in taking a general RISC OS magazine.
Acorn Publisher will consequently continue as it is at present and will be produced every two months as in the past using the same team of contributors as before. UK Subscription rates will remain unchanged but there will be a very slight increase in the Europe and World rates to help pay for the postage of the additional issue of the magazine that will be sent to all subscribers.
New and repeat subscriptions to Acorn Publisher should be sent, as before, to:
Finnybank Ltd, 30 Finnybank Rd, Sale M33 6LR.
Our feedback indicates that Acorn User readers would welcome a change in format and our proposals are radical. Whilst some aspects of the magazine will be kept we intend to bring back favourites from the past together with brand new ideas.
Our experience of producing Acorn Publisher has allowed us to note that, whilst series of articles are appreciated by readers, it is unreasonable to expect a wide range of contributors to produce high quality copy on a monthly basis. It is also evident to us that it would be foolish to produce competing periodicals from the same publisher when they could easily complement one another.
Accordingly the new publication replacing Acorn User will alternate in format each month. One issue will contain a core of graphics, desktop publishing, web design, and networking together with RISC OS news and reviews of hardware and software. The following issue will concentrate on all the other aspects of RISC OS including programming, music & audio, data, utilities, games, education, &c in addition to profiles of RISC OS people and PD sources. We envisage that *Info will return and one or two pages of the magazine may be coloured yellow.
This alternating format is similar to ideas that we planned to implement in Acorn User magazine two years ago when we first offered to buy that magazine.
With immediate effect new and repeat subscription for Acorn User should be sent to:
Finnybank Ltd, 30 Finnybank Road, Sale M33 6LR with cheques made payable to "Finnybank Ltd".
The first format (element) will be the magazine produced for Acorn Publisher subscribers whilst Acorn User subscribers, and those ordering the magazine from newsagents, will obtain the whole picture by taking both elements. As both elements will have to be handled by distributors as one magazine we have decided to give the combined magazine a new name. It will be called Qercus. Those issues going to both Acorn Publisher and Acorn User subscribers will be described as "a fusion of Acorn Publisher and Acorn User - computer graphics and design" and the others as "a fusion of Acorn Publisher and Acorn User - a computer magazine for RISC OS users". The Acorn User name will be featured on the front cover of Qercus until the newsagents' distributors update their records for newsagents in the UK.
Acorn Publisher subscribers will be able to transfer their subscription to the new complete (monthly) magazine. The cover cost of Qercus will be the same as the old Acorn User rate and subscription rates will lie between the costs of AP and AU. During December there will be a special offer for both new and returning subscribers and current subscribers can take advantage of the offer by extending their subscription.
We will be contacting current and recent contributors to both Acorn Publisher and Acorn User to discuss future contribution to Qercus but, as the editorial content of Qercus will be greater than that of the previous magazines combined, we will be looking for more contributions from a wider range of people. If you think you can help then please get in touch with us. This week if possible.
Qercus - graphics & design (6 issues annually + 1 review issue free) 29.95 [Europe 38.84; World 41.15]
Qercus - the whole picture for RISC OS users (13 issues annually) 45.95 [Europe 55.05; World 66.75]
NB - all prices are given in pounds sterling.
Whilst the 6+1 subscription magazine is at the same rate as the previous Acorn Publisher subscription (but includes an additional issue) the 13 issue version is available at this special rate throughout December only. Single issues of Qercus are available at 4.20 + p+p (60p UK, 1.30 Europe, 2.20 World).
New subscription applications for Qercus (please give your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address - which will not be released to third parties) should be sent to:
Finnybank Ltd, 30 Finnybank Road, Sale M33 6LR with cheques made payable to "Finnybank Ltd".
We will be making separate announcements for current Acorn Publisher subscribers wishing to upgrade to 13 issues a year and details of how to obtain Qercus over the Internet.
Current Acorn User subscribers will receive Qercus automatically.
Unless they contact us to upgrade their subscriptions, Acorn Publisher subscribers will automatically receive the graphics & design issues of Qercus every 2 months, together with the free review issue if their subscription extends to the end of next year.
Those at present subscribing to both Acorn Publisher and Acorn User will receive all issues of Qercus and their subscription will be extended automatically.
